Countertop Installation Warranty in Baltimore: What We Cover and How It Works

TopStone Granite stands behind the countertops we fabricate and install for homes and businesses in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. This page explains, in plain language, what our workmanship warranty covers, what it does not and how to get help if something goes wrong.

With 15+ years and 650+ completed jobs behind us, we know where countertops tend to fail: seams, sink mounts and support. Our coverage is built around those points, and the terms for your job are written into your quote and contract.

We are licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission under MHIC #145977, which adds a layer of state protection explained below.

Our Workmanship Warranty

Two kinds of coverage protect a new countertop. Our workmanship warranty covers how the countertop was fabricated and installed. The material manufacturer's warranty covers the product itself and matters most for engineered quartz.

Your written quote and contract state how long our workmanship coverage lasts and exactly what it includes. Read it before you sign, and ask us to explain anything that is unclear.

Repair, resurfacing and sealing work carry their own terms, which we explain before the work starts. A repair blends into stone that already has a history, so its coverage is different from a brand-new install.

What the Workmanship Warranty Covers

Workmanship coverage is about the things an installer controls. These are the three areas where installation problems typically show up.

Seams

A properly made seam stays tight and flush. Coverage addresses seams that separate or develop lippage, where one side sits higher than the other, because of how they were joined or supported. Good seam placement and matching starts long before installation.

Sink Mounting

An undermount sink hangs from the stone, held by adhesive and clips or brackets. Coverage addresses a sink we mounted that drops, gaps or pulls away under normal use. For an older sink that has failed, see undermount sink repair.

Installation Defects

Countertops should sit level, be fully supported and have overhangs that are properly reinforced. Coverage addresses cracks or movement caused by poor support or leveling at installation.

What Is Not Covered

Like most countertop warranties, ours does not cover damage that comes from use rather than installation. Typical exclusions include:

  • Heat damage, such as scorch marks or discoloration from hot pans set directly on quartz
  • Impact damage, such as chips from dropped cookware or edges struck by heavy objects
  • Misuse, such as standing on countertops or cutting directly on them
  • Etching and staining from acids, harsh cleaners or skipped sealing on natural stone
  • Natural fissures, pits and color variation that are part of the stone
  • Problems caused by cabinet settling, water leaks, plumbing work or changes made by others after installation

Most of these can still be fixed. If something happens outside the warranty, our countertop repair service is the next step.

Manufacturer Warranties on Quartz

Quartz manufacturers warrant their material against manufacturing defects. Terms vary widely by brand, from limited multi-year coverage to lifetime coverage.

For example, Cambria publishes a transferable Full Lifetime Warranty on its quartz that stays with the home if you sell. That is one manufacturer's program, and every brand sets its own rules.

Conditions that commonly appear across quartz manufacturer warranties:

  • Registration within a set period after installation
  • Installation by a fabricator who follows the manufacturer's guidelines, and in some programs an authorized fabricator
  • Indoor use only for most quartz, since sunlight can fade or yellow the resin
  • Exclusions for heat damage, chemical damage and impact

Ask which quartz brands we can source for your project and what each manufacturer's warranty requires. Our quartz countertops page covers the material itself.

Natural Stone Variation and Fissures

Granite, marble and quartzite are formed by nature, not in a factory. Fissures, small pits, mineral spots and color shifts across a slab are normal, and natural stone generally does not come with a manufacturer warranty the way quartz does.

A fissure is a natural line in the stone that you can see but usually cannot feel, and it is not a defect. A crack runs through the stone and often catches a fingernail. If you are not sure which you have, read our guide to a crack in a granite countertop.

The best protection is seeing your slab before it is cut. We review the slab and layout with you as part of our process, so the character you approve is the character you get.

How to File a Warranty Claim

If something looks wrong with a countertop we installed, here is what to do:

  1. Stop using the area if it is unsafe. A loose sink or a cracked overhang should not carry weight until it is checked.
  2. Take photos. Shoot a close-up of the problem with a coin for scale, plus a wide shot showing where it is.
  3. Contact us. Email the photos to info@topstonegranite.com or call (667) 400-3297 with your name, address and approximate install date.
  4. Schedule an inspection. We look at the issue in person, explain whether it falls under our workmanship warranty, the manufacturer's warranty or neither, and lay out the fix.
  5. Keep your paperwork. Your contract, invoice and any manufacturer registration make every claim faster.

Your Protection Under Maryland Law

Maryland requires home improvement contractors to be licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. TopStone Granite holds MHIC #145977, which you can verify on the state's public license lookup.

Hiring a licensed contractor also gives you access to the Maryland Home Improvement Guaranty Fund. According to the MHIC, the Fund can compensate homeowners for actual losses from poor workmanship or failure to perform a home improvement contract, up to the amount paid to the contractor and capped at $30,000.

The Fund applies only to work done by licensed contractors. That is one more reason to check any contractor's license number before you sign, ours included.
