TopStone Granite installs, repairs and maintains stone countertops for homeowners in Annapolis, Glen Burnie and the rest of Anne Arundel County. We drive down from our shop on Moravia Park Drive in Northeast Baltimore by way of the Harbor Tunnel and I-97.
We have 15+ years in the trade and more than 650 completed jobs, and we are licensed and insured under MHIC #145977. That license can be checked on the MHIC public lookup.
Anne Arundel kitchens range from colonial-era rooms near the State House to 1950s ramblers near BWI and waterfront homes on the Severn, Magothy and South rivers. Salt air, tight historic streets and two separate permit offices all shape how we plan a job here.

Our usual route is I-895 south through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, which is tolled, then onto I-97 south. Glen Burnie is typically 20 to 30 minutes from the shop, and Annapolis is typically 40 to 50 minutes once you add the run down I-97 to US-50.
Work in the county tends to fall into four groups:
Much of downtown Annapolis lies inside the Annapolis Historic District, where many houses are well over a century old. Streets fan out from State Circle and Church Circle, and Main Street drops steeply to City Dock, so curb space is scarce and the carry from the truck can be long.
Old houses here have narrow doors, steep stairs and walls that lean. We plan piece sizes around the route into the kitchen and scribe the stone to walls that are rarely flat.
Murray Hill, bordered by Spa Creek, West Street and Spa Road, is partly inside the district, and much of it was built in the 1920s. Eastport, across the Spa Creek bridge, mixes older cottages with newer infill homes.
The city's Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior projects in the district, which need a Certificate of Approval. Replacing countertops inside the house is interior work and is not what that review covers.
Severna Park and Arnold sit between the Severn and Magothy rivers, Annapolis Neck lies between the Severn and the South River, and Edgewater faces the South River. Homes on these shorelines see brackish spray, high humidity and strong summer sun on their decks and patios.
That exposure narrows the material list. Most quartz manufacturers do not warrant engineered quartz outdoors because UV light can yellow the resin, so granite and true quartzite are the usual choices. Our quartzite countertops page explains how to tell real quartzite from softer stones sold under the same name.
Outdoor stone near the Bay also needs regular sealing and cleaning so salt and pollen do not dull the finish. See stone sealing and polishing for how sealing works and how to test whether your stone needs it.
Land within 1,000 feet of tidal water or tidal wetlands is in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area. Anne Arundel County requires a buffer of at least 100 feet from the shoreline and limits how much of a lot can be covered by structures, patios and other hard surfaces.
A countertop on an existing deck is rarely the issue. A new slab, patio or built-in grill island close to the water can be, so check with the county's Office of Planning and Zoning before you design one. Our outdoor kitchen countertops page covers bases, stone choices and layouts.

Glen Burnie grew fast after World War II. Harundale, a 1,200-home postwar development, was built there, and in 1958 it gained Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping mall east of the Mississippi.
That era left the area full of ramblers, Cape Cods and split-levels with compact kitchens. Many have been updated once with laminate or tile, and the cabinets underneath may be original, so we check for level and soundness before any stone goes on.
Linthicum sits beside BWI Airport, with similar mid-century housing on quiet streets. Pasadena, on the peninsula between the Patapsco and Magothy rivers, mixes older bungalows, waterfront cottages and newer homes along the creeks.
Anne Arundel has two building permit offices, and your address decides which one you use. Many homes with an "Annapolis" mailing address, including much of Annapolis Neck, are outside the city limits and permit through the county.
In both jurisdictions, replacing tops on existing cabinets with the sink in place is generally finish work. Moving a sink, adding an island with plumbing or outlets, or running gas to an outdoor grill usually needs permits and licensed trades, and your written quote will say which parts of that we handle.
We cover the county from Brooklyn Park and Linthicum in the north to Edgewater in the south.
Crofton grew from a planned community laid out in the 1960s, so many homes there are now on their second or third kitchen. Odenton, next to Fort Meade, has a large share of newer townhomes and single-family homes, where the usual request is an upgrade from builder-grade tops.
Usually not. Most quartz makers exclude outdoor use from their warranties because sunlight can discolor the resin. Granite or real quartzite is the safer choice for a deck or patio on the Bay.
It depends on the stone and how much sun and spray it gets. A simple water test tells you: if a few drops darken the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal. Lighter, more porous granites usually need it more often than dense dark ones.
The Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior work, so new countertops inside your home are generally outside its scope. Plumbing or electrical changes still need a city permit. Exterior projects, such as an outdoor kitchen visible from the street, need a Certificate of Approval.
Often, if the cabinet boxes are solid, square and level. Cabinets from the 1950s and 1960s can have sagging bottoms or loose face frames, and stone will crack over a weak base. We check every box at the measure and tell you which ones need repair before templating.
It depends on whether the property is inside the city limits. Downtown, Murray Hill and Eastport are in the city, while many Annapolis-addressed homes on Annapolis Neck and elsewhere are in the county. Your property tax records show which jurisdiction you are in.
